Hey, I need some advise. Our little Josie is quite the magician. She has escaped from the crate, injuring herself in the process. So we got a gate for the laundry room and while we were out to dinner, she escaped that. I guess she jumped it. I would not mind so much except that she has taken to leaving little doggie surprises in my bedroom when we leave her alone in the house. My next attempt will be to use two gates on top of each other. Or would anyone suggest one of those wire cages?? Any advise how to break her of doggie surprises when we are not home.. I love this little dog already, and there must be a way to modify these behaviors. Help!!

We have a metal crate for our Brutus. We don't use it much any more unless we are at Mom and Dad's but he doesn't seem to mind it. He has a blanket, enough room to stand up and turn around, and he gets a treat every time we put him in. I think also when all of the kids are around it is his safe place, sometime he will go in with no urging.
get an electronic shock collar with proximity switches.
I would also suggest not using the crate only when you are leaving or want her out of the way. Make it a practice to always give her treats there. Put something in the crate that smells like you. Think about it from her perspective. She was lost in the flood and now she has a loving home. Maybe you are never going to come back, either. If it becomes a comfortable, safe place for her, then she will like going in.
We crate our beagle, Bailey. It has always been that way. Of course she is in it if we are out of the house, but she sleeps in it at night too. We leave the door open and she will go in by herself. Michelle's poodle George uses it as his "safe haven" too.
